Submental Liposuction

Individual results may vary.

The patient is often present seeking improvement for stubborn pockets of fat under the chin. Even after months of clean eating and exercise, sometimes these pockets fail to improve. Liposuction can be an attractive option for those who are unhappy with the appearance of their double chin. With a fairly short, minimally invasive procedure, we can greatly improve the contours of the chin, jawline and upper neck.

Submental liposuction is ideal for patients with fatty tissues under the chin, jawline and neck area who have good skin elasticity. Patients who have some mild loose skin may also be candidates, but if skin laxity is too great, liposuction alone can potentially make the looseness worse. Different options for dealing with this situation exist, and Dr. Becker can help you decide the treatment that is best for you.

The procedure is typically done needing only numbing medications similar to those used at the dentist. A mild oral sedative is used to increase patient comfort, as well as a self-controlled nitrous oxide anesthetic gas delivery system that allows you to control your own level of sedation. After the small openings are made, gentle liposuction is then performed from different angles to maximize the improvement in contour. The openings are closed with dissolvable stitches and the head is wrapped in soft bandages for 24 hours. The following day, the bandages are removed and a fabric garment is worn for 1 week. Regular activities can be resumed right away, but Dr. Becker recommends holding off on strenuous activities for 2 weeks following the procedure. Bruising is generally minimal and results are immediately noticeable and greatly improve once swelling subsides.
