All You Need To Know About Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Do you feel like you always look tired, but you’re not? As people age, the eyelids are one of the first places to show it. If you’re in the Raleigh, NC area Dr. Adam Becker’s eyelid surgery can freshen up your eyes and make your appearance look more youthful, alert, and happy!

Eyelid Surgery, also known as Blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that is performed on the upper, lower (or both) sections of the eyelids and can help improve the appearance of the eyelids on the aging face.  As part of the natural aging process, the skin of the eyelids stretches and the muscles supporting them weaken over time, resulting in wrinkles and bulges.

Typical candidates opt to have eyelid surgery because they are experiencing one or some of the following conditions:

  • Droopy, sagging eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Fat deposits that create puffiness in the eyelids
  • Peripheral vision difficulty

All candidates must be in good health and have realistic expectations.  While this surgery is usually done for cosmetic reasons, it is also an effective way to improve sight in older people whose sagging upper eyelids get in the way of their vision.  While wrinkles are greatly reduced with eyelid surgery, some of the fine lines are not able to be removed completely. Blepharoplasty is not effective in reducing crows’ feet, which is usually treated using Botox.  Individual results may vary.

In many cases, patients have eyelid surgery in combination with another procedure, such as a brow lift, face-lift, or skin resurfacing.  During your consultation with Dr. Becker, you will discuss your anti-aging goals and he will provide you with a complete facial analysis and provide you with his recommendations for how to best achieve your best natural and younger-looking results.

The Procedure:

  1. General Anesthesia and medications are administered to make the patient comfortable.
  2. Incision lines are created to so resultant scars are well hidden within the natural structures of the eyelid area.
  3. Openings are created and corrections are made, whether it be excess skin removal, removal and/or repositioning of fat.
  4. Openings are closed with sutures.

Post Procedure:

Patients can expect some mild discomfort and swelling in the areas around the eyes after surgery. Makeup can be worn after sutures are removed in approximately 1 week after surgery. Light activities can usually be resumed the day after surgery, and normal activities, including light exercise, can be resumed one week after surgery.
