Chemical Peels Q & A

Chemical PeelsAfter a long summer of sun exposure, September is the perfect time to restore your healthy glow with a chemical peel. Whether you’ve had a chemical peel in the past, or never before, Yelena Migirova, Medical Esthetician at Triangle Facial Plastic Surgery in Raleigh, NC, is here to cover the basics and address the most common questions we receive about chemical peels.

What exactly is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a facial skin treatment to improve and smooth your skin. A chemical solution is commonly applied to the face to break down the outermost layers of the skin, revealing new glowing skin.

Who should consider getting a chemical peel? What kind of results does a chemical peel yield?
Anyone of any age should consider incorporating a chemical peel into their skincare routine. While we focus on promoting chemical peels in the fall after a summer of sun exposure, anytime is a good time to have a chemical peel. Chemical peels help with a variety of conditions from healthy neutral skin, to conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and more.

Chemical peels promote healthy skin, as they stimulate collagen and exfoliate, resulting in a soft smooth, complexion, and healthy glow.

Are chemical peels safe?
Chemical peels are completely safe.

Is there anyone who should NOT consider a chemical peel?
Anyone who is pregnant, trying to become pregnant or nursing should not get a chemical peel.

How do I know which chemical peel is right for me?
There are a variety of chemical peels available to benefit different skin types and issues. Schedule a complimentary consultation with Yelena so you can learn more about your skin and what treatments are best for you.

Is there any preparation ahead of time?
You don’t need to do anything to prepare for a chemical peel. However, if you are using any retinol or dermatological prescription products, you should discontinue use 3-4 days prior to your chemical peel.

How long will the treatment take and what should I expect to happen?
It depends on the peel, but treatments typically take 30-60 mins. Your appointment will begin with a consultation, where we evaluate your skin and discuss any issues you may be experiencing. The treatment begins with a full skin cleanse and prep. Some patients add on a dermaplaning treatment, which is done before the peel solution is applied. Once the peel is applied, we discuss an ongoing treatment plan to maintain healthy skin.

Is there any downtime?
It depends on the peel. Stronger peels may require additional product applications at home and more downtime for the skin to shed. For most peels, the downtime is minimal and you can assume a normal skincare routine the next day.

How often should I have a chemical peel?
We recommend having some level of a chemical peel every 4-6 weeks. Again, it depends on the skin conditions and which peels are recommended for you. We may not recommend the same exact peel all of the time.

What is your favorite chemical peel and why do you love it so much?

The Timeless Peel is my favorite, as it’s powerful and great for anti-aging, as it targets fine lines, wrinkles, larger pores, and pigmentation. Results are powerful and may include mild to moderate flaking, depending on skin condition. Ingredients – 40% retinol 25% lactic acid.
