Tips to Protect Your Skin This Summer

With summer in full swing, protecting your skin from sun damage is crucial! Here are 5 reminders for how you can protect yourself and maintain healthy skin throughout the summer months.

1. Use a broad spectrum (UVA & UVB) sunscreen every day…especially on your face, even when it’s cloudy! Generously apply sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher all over exposed skin 30 minutes prior to going out in the sun and reapply at least every 2 hours, specifically after swimming or sweating. A water-resistant type is best! Triangle Facial Plastic Surgery offers many sunscreens and can help you select which is best for your skin. Call (919) 706-4900 for more info!
2. Be fashionable while protecting yourself! Have fun and wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses when you head out in the sun. Long sleeves and pants are great additions for additional protection…darker colors provide better protection.
3. Seek shade, especially when the sun’s rays are the strongest during the hours of 10am and 4pm.
4. Use caution if you are taking medications that make you more sensitive to the sun, including specific types of antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, anti-fungals, blood pressure medications and chemotherapies.
5. Don’t forget to see a dermatologist for an annual scan to detect changes and abnormalities.

In addition, don’t forget to give your face and body some extra TLC by exfoliating, hydrating with moisturizer and cooling any overexposed skin with a cooling balm! And don’t forget to drink PLENTY of water!

How to Stay Healthy and Fit This Summer

Summer is a time of fun, happiness and soaking up as much sunshine as we possibly can. With summer comes a more lax schedule and perhaps more barbecues so it’s easy to get off track with our health and fitness goals. While summer is the perfect season to have some fun and indulge a little, it’s important to remember some practices in order to stay healthy and fit during the summer season. Whether you’re on a diet or you’re just looking to maintain your health and fitness, I have some tips to guide you forward so that you can enjoy the summer season without neglecting your health and fitness goals.

1. Opt for Healthier Options

You may have a ton of barbecues this summer, but you don’t have to dig in and eat the greasiest options there. Try to opt for healthier food options while at a barbecue. Eating chicken versus a greasy burger and salads versus chips are just a couple of options that will work as “healthier” options.

2. Travel Light

If you’re going on vacation and have to carry travel luggage, be sure to pack light. Many injuries occur when we travel with heavier luggage. You don’t have to pack everything to go on vacation, take only your essential needs so that your luggage doesn’t strain any muscles.

3. Stay Hydrated

Summer season is a time where we visit friends and family, perhaps you travel to go on vacation. The season is full of activities and fun, it’s no wonder many people forget to stay hydrated. It’s important that you get a travel water bottle so that you can stay hydrated during your busy summer schedule.

4. Slow the Alcohol

If you’re going to enjoy some alcoholic beverages in the summer heat, try to slow it down. Alcohol can actually dehydrate you more when you’re out in the sun. Consider drinking fewer alcoholic beverages when you’re at a daytime event with friends or family to avoid dehydration.

When it comes to staying healthy and fit this summer you simply need to remember that staying fit and healthy means making better decisions no matter what anyone else is doing. Take your limits into consideration when it comes to food and carrying things, in addition to the tips, I shared above, be sure that you keep sunscreen on hand to avoid sunburn and cancer risk from the dangerous rays of that beautiful sunshine.

April 3rd is National Walking Day

April 3rd is National Walking Day!  Set aside 30 minutes of your day, round up your friends and/or family and get out there and go for a walk!

National walking day began in 2007 by the American Heart Association with the intention of celebrating physical activity.  Walking is one of the simplest ways to stay fit and active. Research has shown that walking can have an impact on your overall health and lower your chances of heart disease.

Tips for Walking:

  1. Always wear sunscreen!
  2. Wear comfortable shoes and socks.
  3. Stay hydrated.  Lots of water is key for a successful walk!
  4. Buddy up.  Not only is it nice to have company on a walk, but having a friend come along is safer than walking alone.
  5. Don’t forget to stretch before and after!
  6. Pump your arms to get your heart rate up and maintain good posture.
  7. If you walk at night, be sure to bring a flashlight and wear reflective gear.

There are many local charity walks this Spring in the Raleigh Area, so if you are looking for a healthy activity backed by a good cause, be sure to sign up for one (or some) of these upcoming walks.

Sunday 4/7 – Dog Days 5K and 2 Mile Walk – NC Museum of Art, Raleigh

Sunday 4/7 – Autism Speaks Walk – Duke University Campus, Durham

10 Ways To Make Guests Feel At Home During The Holidays

I love the holidays! Guests visiting makes the house come alive. Sometimes it is easy to worry if your guest will feel comfortable. I love to make little touches to help my guests feel at home when visiting so they can truly enjoy themselves.

Here are some tips to help you during the holiday season to be sure your guests will feel at home during their stay with you:

  1. Clean and declutter your guest room. Giving your guest some personal space can help them feel comfortable and sleep well in a new place.

  1. Give the house a good cleaning but don’t worry about aiming for perfection. Often we want things to be perfect when our guests come but all that happens is that we make our home feel cold and unapproachable. We want our guests to feel at home and that means we should make our homes relaxed and cozy.

  1. Set out extra blankets to snuggle with. Winter is chilly and throws blankets and extra pillows make your home cozy and feeling warm.

  1. Use a diffuser to make your home smell pretty. Holiday scents are always a great option. Look for a fragrance that is safe for kids and sensitive individuals.

  1. Leave snacks and drinks in a place that makes it clear to your guests that it is meant for them so they don’t feel uncomfortable asking for something they need. A quick reminder for them to “make yourself at home” will also help with this!

  1. Provide your guests with a few things to keep them entertained. While most likely they will use what device they bring with them things like books, magazines, and games they can do if they have trouble sleeping is always a good idea. If children are coming as well, be sure to put a box of toys and games to help keep kids entertained.

  1. Give your guests the Wifi password so they can connect online without using up data because they forgot, or feel uncomfortable, asking for it.

  1. Bake a treat or make their favorite food for dinner. This is a great way to make everyone, kids especially, feel at home when visiting. There is nothing like a batch of fresh baked cookies to start a conversation and get a kid to feel at home.

  1. If you have a closet in the guest room where your guests will be staying, offer them some spare hangers to hang their clothes. Also, offer an iron if they need it. Packed clothes wrinkle no matter what you do to pack them, and this gesture can mean a lot!

  1. Put out extra bath and hand towels in the guest bathroom, as well as some spare travel bottles of shampoo and soap. You can pick them up at most stores for under a dollar, and in the event they forgot to pack these types of items with them, this offering is very sweet and keeps the guest from having to ask for these things when everyone is rushing to get ready in the morning.

Enjoy the holidays, and enjoy your company. It always goes by so fast, so soak it all in and capture those precious moments.
